On May 5, 1980, seven-year-old Anna Bachmeier decided to skip school after an argument with her mother. Anna was tricked and kidnapped by a 35-year-old butcher, Klaus Grabowski, who promised to let her play with the cats in his house. He kept Anna in his house for several hours, sexually assaulted her and finally strangled her with his girlfriend's dress. This crime was revealed through the testimony of his girlfriend.

On March 6, 1981, during the third day of the trial, Marianne Bachmeier, the girl's mother, smuggled a Beretta 70 pistol into the courtroom of the Lübeck District Court and shot her daughter's killer, Klaus Grabowski, in the back. She pointed the gun at Grabowski's back and pulled the trigger eight times. Seven shots hit him and the 35-year-old accused died instantly.

Marian was charged with murder but was allowed to go free after serving three years in prison.
